February 27, 2025Billy Elliot is an American coming-of-age stage musical. It is based on the 2000 film of the same name. Lee Hall, who also created the script, wrote the book and lyrics to the film, which has music by Elton John. Billy, a British youngster without a mother, is at the center of this story. He decides to start taking dance classes. The narrative of his struggle and triumph is countered with the narrative of family and communal unrest brought on by the UK miners’ strike in County Durham, North East England, in 1984 and 1985. Hall drew inspiration for his screenplay from A. J. Cronin’s The Stars Look Down, a 1935 novel about a miners’ strike and the first song in the musical is a tribute to that book.
In 2005, the musical made its world premiere at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London’s West End. It was nominated for nine Laurence Olivier Awards and won four, including Best New Musical. The show lasted till April of 2016. As a result of its popularity, it was staged in Australia, on Broadway, and in a wide variety of other locations worldwide. The Tony’s and Drama Desk Awards in New York City gave it ten wins, including Best Musical. Several Australian honors, including a record-tying seven Helpmann Awards, have been bestowed upon it. On November 24, 2014, in the United Kingdom, a DVD and Blu-ray of a live performance of the musical were made available. This is a show not to be missed.
